Maruti Suzuki Discontinues Grand Vitara CNG Variant: A Strategic Shift in Powertrain Offerings

Maruti Suzuki, India's leading automobile manufacturer, has reportedly removed the CNG variant of its popular compact SUV, the Grand Vitara, from its official website and brochure. This move suggests a possible discontinuation of the CNG model, although no official statement has been released by the company.

Background: The Grand Vitara CNG Launch

Introduced in early 2023, the Grand Vitara CNG was part of Maruti Suzuki's initiative to expand its eco-friendly vehicle lineup. The CNG variant was available in two trims—Delta and Zeta—priced at ₹12.85 lakh and ₹14.84 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively. Equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, the vehicle delivered 103 horsepower in petrol mode and 87 horsepower in CNG mode, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. The CNG model boasted a fuel efficiency of 26.6 km/kg, appealing to cost-conscious consumers.

Reasons Behind the Discontinuation

While Maruti Suzuki has not officially confirmed the discontinuation, several factors may have influenced this decision:

  • Market Demand: The compact SUV segment is often associated with performance and premium features. The CNG variant, aimed at fuel efficiency, may not have resonated with the target demographic seeking aspirational vehicles.

  • Design Constraints: The implementation of a single-cylinder CNG tank in the Grand Vitara significantly reduced boot space, potentially deterring buyers who prioritize utility and storage. Maruti Suzuki has previously utilized dual-cylinder technology in commercial vehicles like the Super Carry, but this was not extended to the Grand Vitara.

  • Strategic Focus: Maruti Suzuki continues to offer the Grand Vitara in petrol and strong hybrid variants. The non-hybrid 1.5L 4-cylinder engine delivers 103.06 PS and 139 Nm, available with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, and an optional ALLGRIP 4WD system. The hybrid variant features a 1.5L 3-cylinder engine paired with an eCVT gearbox, focusing on performance and efficiency.

Implications for the Indian Automotive Market

The removal of the Grand Vitara CNG variant reflects Maruti Suzuki's adaptive strategy in response to consumer preferences and market dynamics. As the company continues to expand its green powertrain offerings, the focus appears to be shifting towards hybrid and electric vehicles, aligning with global automotive trends.

While the discontinuation of the CNG variant may disappoint some environmentally conscious consumers, it underscores Maruti Suzuki's commitment to innovation and meeting evolving customer expectations. The company may explore more advanced and space-efficient CNG technologies in the future to cater to the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.
